To Cry Or Not To Cry? That Is The Question...

Writer's picture: Janessa McKayJanessa McKay

In today's day and age, we are programmed and trained to be strong and stoic. Showing emotion or crying is seen as "weak." Well to that I say, "PSHHHHHHH...get with the times!" I believe we are in the midst of a great shift in humanity. We have been ruled by the masculine energy for so long...struggles for power and control seemed to have taken over and our feminine side is put to the wayside. While I do believe the masculine energy is important, I think it has served it's purpose and it is time to embrace the feminine energy that is inside all of us. Now, I'm not saying everyone should become cross dressers or something... 🤣 (although if you want to I say go for it!) all I'm saying is, it's okay to have emotion and express it.

Growing up I was a very sensitive child and yes I would get very emotional over small things...happy or sad. I used to think that was a bad quality or a weakness. But now I see it as one of my greatest strengths. I think the world needs more people to be empathetic and in touch with their own emotions. We are taught to stuff down any emotions that are seen as "negative" and sweep them under the rug never to be seen again. The problem with this is eventually the rug can no longer hide all the dust you've been sweeping under it for years and years. Then POOF...out of no where there is dust everywhere and it seems like an out of control mess. That is how it can sometimes feel when people bottle things in and then suddenly it all pours out at once. I can speak personally on this, as this is how I would deal with a lot of my own emotions. If things bothered me, I would push it down and try not to say anything. Eventually it lead me to be stressed, anxious and depressed.

It is these dense emotions that can weigh us down in our day to day life. If we don't let them come to the surface to deal with it, these emotions can cause energetic blocks in the body. If these energetic blocks are stagnant for long enough this can lead to disease in the body. I was taught that disease is really "dis-ease." That all illnesses have a emotional root cause. There is something that is unpleasant, painful, or intense and this is our bodies way of shining light on the issue. To show us what it is we are not dealing with or afraid to look at.

In my own life, it wasn't until I gave myself permission to let everything out, that some of those feelings went away. And that is what I am recommending for anyone that is struggling to find their own voice, or going through painful emotions. Find a healthy way to release it. For me (being a very emotional person) if I feel like crying, I just cry. I have a quick boo hoo and then move on. It is my way of releasing those emotions whether happy or sad. Yes, I sometimes cry if there is a sappy commercial, listening to music that touches my soul or simply a beautiful sunset. Find what works for you. Whatever emotions you are feeling...LET IT OUT! Whether that is through journaling, crying or screaming into a pillow.

So many people nowadays wear this mask of "Oh I'm happy and everything is fine." In reality we all know that's not necessarily true, so why are we not honest and upfront about how we are really feeling? If everyone was truly honest about how they felt, I feel we would have a much more honest and open society. This is where the feminine energy comes in. If we can open our hearts to be compassionate and nurturing, we can help each other along this journey.

The main message I'm wanting to say is...don't hold things in. Good, bad, happy, sad...let it all out. We are emotional beings so let us step into who we truly are and love each other along the way.
